main home week 1 week 2 week 3 week 4 week 5 week 6 week 7 week 8 week 9 week 10 week 11 week 12 week 13 week 14 week 15 weeks 16-18 week 19 week 20 categories: uncategorized (1) archives: june 2008 (1) meta: register log in rss comments rss valid xhtml xfn wp june 3, 2008 preamble filed under: uncategorized — xplozn @ 2:00 am so how did this idea of me travelling around australia throughout 2008 come about. the decision was done in a moment of madness during the perth baby expo whilst i was massaging a particularly attractive client. we were talking about my fondness for driving and the fact that i had driven to the sydney and brisbane expo’s over the past few years, yet had not found it in myself to make the long trek over the nullaboor. as we were chatting, i found myself thinking that i have no responsibilities in melbourne (or geelong since i had left ford some months earlier) and there would be no better time for a young-ish bloke to make a decision to leave melbourne and drive all around the countryside. i would take in all the baby expo’s around the country on my jaunt and do a few other private projects along the way, and would have a damn good time away from everyone and everything. sounds like heaven right… except that the thing i needed to escape from was coming with me…. myself! deciding on how the best way to attempt this was the main concern. should i buy a caravan and attach it to baby huey (for those of you who don’t know, my car’s rego begins with uee – thus the reference to huey. it is also a step up from the orange datsun 200b with the white vinyl roof that saw me through my early years of driving – just). i toyed with the idea of trading huey in for a combi/bongo van. of course, no references or thoughts of the falconio case crossed my mind. rather it was the nightmarish occurences that took place when 7 blokes drove over to pascoe vale the day after the 1995 grand final to puchase their joint jewel…a clapped out, rustic, broken down white combi van which at least had a good radio. the fact that this brutal machine broke down on the tullamarine freeway as we were driving it home after paying $1600 cash for it, and dumping it in rodan st, north melbourne for 4 days until we could get it towed to a mechanic was enough to put me off ever driving or owning a bongo ever again. finally i decided that i would just use the car to sleep in and around when i was in a warmer climate, and live out of the car for the best part of 6 months. madness you say…. you could well be right. still, not having to share the front passenger seat-cum bed with anyone seemed a bit more sensible than spending a lot of hard-earned bucks on a caravan that i would only use for a limited time. as time wore on into the new year, i began to plot my journey and planning what i needed to get and do. the biggest thing was to have internet access and also electricity to run my computer and car fridge whilst i was going around. after much searching, i finally got arb to install a huge powerpack (called a thumper) which converts and inverts 12v power into 240 power. saved! (pity it is at such low wattage that i can’t actually run my jug, heater or griller off it but that’s another story). i managed to kit the suby out with all the mod con’s i thought i would require. roof racks and rhino rack storage pod, fridge, inverter, doona, massage table (obviously) sleeping bag and gas burner/bbq (thanks heaps ellie diggit). i even managed to arrange internet access through telstra bigpond. that in itself is a story worth relating. whatever you do, i urge everyone to stay away from the warren in the telstra shop in southland. fair dinkum, the big buffoon just lied about everything that i asked him in order to sell me a very expensive modem card, and to force me to sign on for a 12 month contract when i only wanted to sign on for 6. being told that i didn’t have to sign on for 12, and that telstra does not block the main email “outgoing’ port because they want to force you to use your ‘bigpond.com’ address rather than your own ‘beyondrelief.com.au’ address was a farce but he assured me that it wouldn’t happen. (i knew better and found out the hard way about his lies). i also found out that yes, i did have to sign on for a 12 month contract rather than just 6 because there was no option for 6. warren, mate, you are a clown. i digress. finally, with the suby all kitted out with every mod con i could muster (and afford) i set out on a cold autumn sunday morning from melbourne to go to bendigo to see mum and dad for the day. the story continues on the following pages. comments (144) -- word press theme: galway
